This agreement is still only a first step. EU negotiators and the UK government have agreed on an agreement to withdraw the UK from the EU. The agreement must be approved by the British Parliament and the European Parliament before it enters into force. However, the rights and obligations of the EEA agreement continue to apply in the United Kingdom for the duration of the implementation period. The EEA-EFTA Separation Agreement will therefore apply primarily to issues that arise after the end of the transposition period. 9.Officials noted that „the vast majority of contractual obligations will not come into force until the end of the transitional period,“ adding that the United Kingdom and Norway „agreed to implement the articles of the agreement that will apply in the same way as the other EEA-EFTA states, which may apply provisionally until the agreement enters into force.“ This agreement with Norway is a political (not legal) obligation and has been „anchored by a non-binding exchange of verbal notes“. 14.FCO officials then confirmed that there had been „no problem with the application of this agreement to crown dependencies“ and that the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Justice, while continuing to cooperate regularly with the Crown Dependencies, do not foresee „relevant issues“ looming. 25.Article 46 of the agreement provides for certain intellectual property rights. In particular, the Euro annexed to the agreement stated that, with regard to geographical indications, „existing geographical indications remain protected in the United Kingdom until a future agreement comes into force and replaces these agreements. Existing geographical indications of the UNITED Kingdom will continue to be protected by the current EU regime. The Northern Ireland Protocol, known as the Irish Backstop, was an annex to the November 2018 draft agreement outlining provisions to avoid a hard border in Ireland after the UK`s withdrawal from the European Union. The protocol provided for a provision of the safety net to deal with the circumstances in which satisfactory alternative arrangements were to come into force at the end of the transition period.
